Efficiency, Savings and Safety

These are the three pillars on which KADANT relies to achieve the core objective of its mission: the improvement of production processes in the paper industry.

The target that the KADANT group aims at, with its participation in the MIAC, is not to present itself as a supplier of a wide range of products, but to provide targeted and customised technological solutions capable of achieving tangible and measurable results that bring a real advantage to all our customers.

Today we present 3 leading players who will show us how KADANT's solutions can help papermakers in a practical and effective way through experience, professionalism and innovation.

IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF THE PAPER INDUSTRY WITH FORWARD-LOOKING SOLUTIONS

GRAZIANO BUTTIGLIONE - Technical Director - Kadant Johnson Systems International

Perspective is one of the characteristics that large paper manufacturers must have today. The last few years have taught us that overcoming sudden moments of crisis is only possible if we have invested and planned ahead, with a vision oriented towards the future.

In order to be ready for 'tomorrow', it is necessary to act well 'today' and carry out investments guided by the logic of ROI (Return Of Investment), with real and measurable objectives in both the short and medium term.

KADANT JOHNSON SYSTEMS

was founded with this in mind; to help companies in the paper industry with relevant projects that can guarantee an economic return. Today in the world we are considered the specialists in drying process optimisation, our goal is to design solutions that improve the energy efficiency of steam systems which translate into lower production costs for paper mills.

Our approach, which is highly appreciated by customers, can be divided into three stages: first, we perform a THERMAL ANALYSIS of the drying sections, thus obtaining a true picture of the health of the paper machine. We then carry out the ENERGETIC BREAKDOWN of the machine, analysing its efficiency in terms of both heat transfer and steam consumption. Finally, we move on to PROJECT, i.e. we analyse what possible improvements can be made to the plant layout, useful to obtain the results highlighted by the study.

Our forecasts are based on a scientific method developed by Kadant's R&D department, which makes them objective, realistic and guaranteed. In most cases, the benefits in terms of cost savings are so great that the investment is usually paid back within a few months.

ENERGY OPTIMISATION OF STEAM SYSTEMS; REAL AND MEASURABLE BENEFITS

GIUSEPPE CALLEO - Managing Director - Kadant Johnson Systems International

Energy is always at the top of the agenda in our industry; it is a crucial issue for the present and especially the future of the paper industry.

Unpredictable and sudden variations in the cost of raw materials, such as gas, are very frightening for those who run paper production plants, which have also had to face times of unavailability of supplies over the past year.

Our systems optimisation service stems from this need.  We carry out surveys to identify energy usage in paper mills; these surveys are aimed at verifying whether energy consumption is in line with the standards set for the specific plant. By analysing machine performance, we are able to understand if there are any efficiency losses, especially in the drying phase, during which a lot of gas is used to generate the steam needed for the process.

What really sets us apart is that we at KADANT do not sell advice, but provide a precise, measurable and concrete result. After surveys, thanks to the unique know-how and experience of our engineers, we are able to identify the amount of steam/hour that can be saved through optimisation. The real benefit for companies in the paper industry is clear and undeniable. For the customer, our work represents an investment with a clear, calculable economic return.

This is possible thanks to the expertise of our staff, who are constantly trained in the Kadant Johnson Centre of Excellence, where real operating conditions can be simulated, testing solutions applicable to steam and condensate systems for paper machines. The test centre is unique in that it allows you to see, in real time, what is happening inside the dryer cylinders and, thanks to the analysis of condensate behaviour, allows you to choose and demonstrate the right combination of rotary joints, syphons and associated components to meet specific requirements.

WHEN PROVIDING THE BEST COMPONENTS IS NOT ENOUGH; OUR GUIDANCE AND CONTROL SERVICE

DANILO VOLONTE' - Area Manager Paper - Johnson-Fluiten srl

There is a lot of talk about energy and, above all, efficiency; topics that, given the importance of costs, are very much on the agenda. All machinery must perform to the max, avoiding any waste of time and especially steam, which is produced through the use of large amounts of energy, mainly from natural gas.

This is why we not only offer excellent products, but also a FREE inspection service for our rotary joints.

The purpose of this service is to establish the status of the rotary joints used by the customer, verifying that the efficiency of the system is always at a top level.

Graphite is a key component of the rotary joint that is exposed to wear during normal use. It is very important to keep an eye on its condition as it must be replaced immediately with a new one if it becomes excessively worn. The risk is steam leakage, which is linked to energy consumption, resulting in a significant increase in costs.

In addition to the economic side, there is also the operator safety aspect to consider; wear and tear on the component can cause unexpected steam leaks which, given the high temperatures and pressures, can be very dangerous.

This is why we recommend to all paper mills, our top of the line joint that represents excellence for steam management applications in the PAPER industry: the PT2X rotary joint. The ability to change graphite in a FAST and SIMPLE way is a benefit that no other competitor can provide. Our customers who use this product indicate a time saving of more than 300% for maintenance, which translates into many more hours that the operator can spend on other production tasks.

At KADANT, our daily mission is to help our customers improve their production processes by providing safe, reliable and innovative products, services and expertise.

Our fluid handling products and technologies are used to control fluid flow in process industries around the world.
