Selection by Operational Variables

Rotary joint selection depends on 6 key factors:

1 - Pressure - INDICATED IN "BAR" or "PSIG”

Fluid pressure affects the seal and/or bearings of the rotary joint. Higher pressure will limit the number of joints that can be used.

2 – Speed - INDICATED IN "RPM” 

Rotational speed affects bearings and sealing. Seals seal the fluid between the rotating part of the machine and the stationary part. They are subject to friction and are wear parts.

3 – Temperature - INDICATED IN °C or °F

Temperature affects many parts of the rotary joint: seals, bearings, and choice of materials. The mechanical seal often reaches 340°C, for o-rings and lip seals the temperature is determined by the limits of the material of which they are composed. The temperature is influenced by the temperature of the fluid and additional friction in the mechanical seal and bearings.

4 – Fluid - e.g. AIR / WATER / OIL / STEAM / MQL…

The fluid influences the seal. Some sealing materials do well with water while others with oil or air. Small amounts of fluid will leak between the rotating and stationary parts: depending on the choice the fluid will lubricate the seal and improve performance, in other applications in this case the seal will perform worse.

5 – Volume - INDICATED IN "INCHES" or "MILLIMETERS”

Determines the size of the passages and thus the size of the joint to be used. Important to consider is the velocity of the fluid within the passage.

6 - Number of passes - INDICATED WITH A NUMBER

Determines the configuration of the joint. Rotary joints often have 1 or 2 passages and have a wide range of sealing materials available. When 3 or more passages are required, lip seals and o-rings are used.

In the current business context, there are many manufacturers of fluid management components that target the machine builder market. How we achieve, with our rotary joints, a leading place among the most important manufacturers of production lines in the plastics and rubber industry?

Let's find out the answer by analyzing the case of the development of the RX rotary joint with a "special head" for a major international customer that manufactures industrial plastic machinery; this project helped to simplify the customer's handling of components and ensured REAL & VERIFIED savings in time, energy and money.

The market background

The rotary joints previously used by our client, a large global player in the construction of rubber and plastics machinery, required the development and production of special heads to fit the special design of the machines.

This process was taking place in-house; the components were then used to adapt and mount rotary joints in the internal housings of their machines in the following applications: Preheater, Detaching Cylinders, Lifting Assembly, Embosser, and Cooler.

The study of the application and the standard component

The challenge to face

The task for Johnson-Fluiten & Kadant johnson Europe staff was to come up with a solution that was going to bring real benefits to the customer. The goal was not to sell a product with improved performance, but to make the entire process simpler and more efficient to provide a real advantage over the previously adopted solution.

Application needs were then identified:

• 1 - Implementation of a rotary joint with a special head

• 2 - Change in the standard length of the joint rotor

• 3 - Adaptability to different media used such as: cold water, superheated water, diathermic oil

The development of the custom solution design

The evolution of the custom project

The technical team identified the solution by adapting the 1-inch RX rotary joint by increasing the length of the rotor by 20 mm and designing a complete custom flange that would fit the dimensions and specs of the machine to allow quick assembly and easier maintenance without the need to make additional design changes to the line.

After the required surveys and preliminary tests, it was possible to produce a prototype within a tight timeframe to verify that the size, dimensions, and connections were 100% compatible with the technical solutions adopted on the machine produced by the customer.

After passing all preliminary tests, we mass-produced the component that became the standard in that line of machinery produced by the customer company.

The benefits reported by the customer were many and of high relevance considering that the rotary joint was delivered ready to be assembled:

1. Standardization

A single rotary joint for all the different media used (Diathermic Oil, Superheated Water, Cooling Water) thanks to the internal mechanical seal that can be easily changed

2. Simplification

The production management of the machine on which the new rotary joints are mounted has benefited; the number of codes handled in the warehouse has been reduced, and the assembly and maintenance timeframes have been greatly reduced

3. Decreased costs

The customer no longer has to be set up to make part of the component in-house; this has led to the resulting zero cost of in-house production and management

4. Quality increase

Unions with bearings have the advantage of having low friction, especially if mounted in set; this is a useful technical solution to eliminate some of the torque. In addition, their internal mechanical seal makes maintenance less frequent

The 20th anniversary of the company's foundation is an ideal occasion to remember the extraordinary professional and individual personality of Alberto Delfo Colombo, who sadly passed away a few months ago, and who was the real driving force behind the establishment and success of Johnson-Fluiten.

The Johnson-Fluiten project comes from the distinctive identities and features of the two companies that shaped it: Fluiten and Kadant Johnson.

Fluiten is a historic Italian company representing excellence in the precision mechanical industry. Since 1961 it has produced Mechanical Seals for rotating shafts for pumps and agitators used in the Chemical, Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, Food, Energy and Oil & Gas industries.

Kadant Johnson  or rather, the historical company named The Johnson Corporation was founded in the United States in 1933 and pioneered the invention of the rotary pressure joint. Over the years, the company has grown to become a world leader in the production of steam rotary joints. In 2005, the company was acquired by the multinational Kadant Inc. and renamed Kadant Johnson.

Delfo Colombo; the man, the entrepreneur

In 1962 Alberto Delfo Colombo, known to all as Delfo, founded Fluiten, the mechanical sealing company for industry which just over forty years later would give life, along with The Johnson Corporation (now Kadant Johnson) to Johnson-Fluiten.

Fluiten represents excellence in the design and manufacture of mechanical seals. As the founder, who recently passed away, state:

"Fluiten's excellent results today are the result of more than 60 years of dedication, passion and achievements. Three elements were necessary to achieve these goals: technologies, investments, but above all, people who are the assets capable of making the real difference in business organizations. In fact, an organized team of highly qualified and motivated individuals is essential for the achievement of these goals".

Quality, at any cost

For Delfo Colombo, making quality products has always been a point of distinction. As he remarked, "My main focus was on mechanical seals, which had to perform well: they had to last, not leak, and be cost-effective."

Even today, these are challenges that Fluiten must continue to face because as time passes and technology evolves, market demands raise the bar higher and higher: seals that used to be good for certain applications and for certain limits now have to be reconsidered because the limits are being moved. Increasingly high operating conditions, certifications, safety and emission control are the factors to which much attention must be paid. Quality and the pursuit of excellence have become our trademark”.

The company is the result of a joint venture between two well established companies in the sector, Fluiten Italia Spa and Kadant Johnson: in this interview Fulvio Colombo, General Manager of Fluiten Italia Spa, and Mark Strik, Vice President for Europe of Kadant Johnson's Flow Control sector, describe the genesis, growth and prospects of the company twenty years after the foundation of Johnson-Fluiten.

A synergic collaboration between two different companies that becomes a successful case study for industry business. The history, opportunities, marketing and innovation, the past and the future of Johnson-Fluiten Srl reveal what has led this joint venture to become a company with a strong brand and a unique proposition in the rotary joint industry.

Johnson-Fluiten has been in the rotary joint market for 20 years, and is now well known and appreciated, but not everyone knows its origins. How did the collaboration between Kadant and Fluiten begin?

Fulvio Colombo: I have heard this story many times... About 22 years ago, at the end of a long business trip, waiting for the flight home, in a bar in Naples in front of a café, my father, Delfo Colombo found himself discussing with his sales manager, Rino Campaniello, about the range of products that was being offered to the market.

Mechanical seals were the core business of Fluiten Spa, and the production of rotary joints was an interesting and growing part of the company, which required some thought.

The commercial management of this product range was a challenge for the company, which did not have a dedicated sales and marketing structure for this market, since the target customers were not the same as for mechanical seals.

When reflecting on the situation of the different players, it was realised that a name often associated with rotary joints was 'Johnson', but the same name was not present among those of the direct competitors listed by customers.

Mark Strik: The Johnson Corporation was already known as a world leader in the production of steam rotary joints, which were mainly used in paper mills, where the name 'Johnson' was synonymous with 'rotary joint'. Thanks to its extensive sales network, all the most industrialised nations had easy access to steam products and service. What was lacking, however, was specific know-how and product lines to cope with the industrial market which, due to its peculiar applications, relied on different fluids such as oil - water and air.

For this reason, the two companies had never come face to face; both made rotary joints but with different features for different customers. And the development of the industrial sector, especially the European one, was too interesting not to be one of the company's business expansion targets.

So in the early 1990s we had two companies in the same market with different products, cultures, sizes and needs. How difficult was it to come up with the idea of a common project?

Fulvio Colombo: Precisely these differences made the first contacts possible; not being 'direct competitors' means there was no rivalry and, after a short time, the idea that it would be possible to 'complete each other' began to take shape. Fluiten was looking for the right resources to deploy in order to promote its rotary joints and serve customers in an increasingly international market, being able to rely on the technical excellence of the product, production flexibility and a long history in the industrial machinery industry.

Mark Strik: Johnson, on the other hand, aimed to develop new products suitable for an industrial market outside the industry in which it was a leader. The decision to create a technical team to produce a successful range of rotary joints appeared to be a complex and time-consuming process, as the company had no specific know-how on the different target industrial applications. Understanding each other's qualities and working together to achieve common goals was easier than expected.

Fulvio Colombo: Exactly. The business goals were complementary, but the thing that allowed this synergy to grow and take shape was definitely the common mindset. The companies realised that the compatibility was deep: being both 'family' businesses they shared values, ideals, ethics and approach to work.

Mark Strik: Let's say that there was an immediate 'feeling' on a personal level... I would say that considering the similarities, as soon as the idea of a possible joint project emerged, everyone liked the idea. The path that then led to the birth of Johnson-Fluiten was remarkably quick and easy. The first few years were exciting for the whole team!

What were the most memorable moments that you remember from this long journey together that has lasted 20 years?

Mark Strik: One of the most exciting moments was when the company surpassed 10 million in turnover. We are talking about a growth of about four times the initial volume... reaching this amount seemed unthinkable. It was the proof that putting passion and commitment into a project can make it successful and lead to incredible result.

Fulvio Colombo: I believe that the acquisition of Johnson by KADANT in 2005 was also a key event. A large listed multinational absorbing the company with which we had recently shared a common path... The initial concern then dissipated very quickly as the relationship of mutual trust never failed.

Speaking of business and market, what has differentiated Johnson-Fluiten solutions from the competitors? And are these aspects still valid today?

Mark Strik: There are several aspects that have been, and still are, winners in the Johnson-Fluiten offering; the range of products... with our rotary joints we can handle all types of fluid: water, oil (diathermic but also hydraulic), coolant, air and steam. And this allows us to successfully serve different markets; from steel to pharmaceuticals, from machine tools to food, and from paper to rubber and plastic.

More specifically, Johnson-Fluiten products can be proud of a unique benefit; thanks to our know-how we have developed a unique solution; the 'Quick Replacement Design'(QRD). The R-RH series couplings have been designed to allow quick replacement of the mechanical seal without having to remove the component from the machine. The advantage for users is considerable; the machine equipped with QRD rotary joints will benefit from extremely reduced maintenance times compared to the same machine with standard components.

Fulvio Colombo: Another key factor behind the success lies in Johnson-Fluiten's DNA, as it is very similar to Fluiten's. A very important share of the current production is represented by CUSTOM and tailor-made products. Distinctiveness from the competition is an added value that is still recognised by the market.

Fulvio Colombo: The market nowadays takes many things for granted; all users expect, or rather 'demand' that the product works and performs to the highest level. And this must be understood, the basis for our joints is production quality, the care with which components are made, then assembled and finally tested is now the starting point against which we compete in the world of manufacturing.

The real point of difference nowadays is service.

The importance of everything 'behind' the final product is especially important to us. Aspects such as speed of reply and repair service, the search for customised solutions and constant customer focus are the real goals for us.

Mark Strik: When we think about Johnson-Fluiten products, we want to be associated with all-round quality; both the pre-sales and after-sales service provided by our sales staff and the technical staff when it comes to finding solutions to problems on special applications.

We want to become a true 'partner' for the customer; we want to provide solutions, we want to do this as effectively as possible and as quickly as possible when it comes to delivery.

The issue of sustainability and efficiency is also of vital importance to us. This is what our products must guarantee, a real value for the customer that must be translated into an advantage.

For example, with the introduction of our latest joints that can be adapted to more fluids and applications, we can reduce the customer's inventory that can use one solution for more machines.

Let's take a look at the future, what are the prospects and next goals?

Mark Strik: We want to continue to grow. The drive to keep expanding the product portfolio and the quality standard is the concept that has proven to be successful..

Fulvio Colombo: Internal expansion. Definitely, but also geographically, there are still several areas that have a lot of margin for development. I am thinking of emerging economies, South America to Asia for example. And to certain sectors that are proving to be increasingly interesting, for example that of RENDERING machines, i.e. for processing animal waste to produce bone meal.

Mark Strik: There are many goals we are aiming for, but given the results beyond our expectations so far, we can only drive our resources and passion in the same direction we took 20 years ago. And as we say, "sky is the limit…”.

A Glimpse into the Inner Workings of OTS Rotary Unions

OTS rotary unions employ strategically positioned ports to manage the fluid flow within the journal's channels. In order to be ready for 'tomorrow', it is necessary to act well 'today' and carry out investments guided by the logic of ROI (Return Of Investment), with real and measurable objectives in both the short and medium term.

In conventional calendering machines, the most commonly used Johnson-Fluiten rotary joints are the R-series; components that handle water or diathermic oil, whose performance has been carefully designed for cooling and heating applications for plastic or rubber-based products. These standard unions are also designed with the aim of achieving the best cost/benefit ratio available on the market for this type of product.

But when it comes to equipping special machines in testing laboratories, as environmental conditions are extreme and change rapidly and frequently, it is necessary to rely on tailor-made solutions

To handle temperatures of up to 400°C, which are necessary for calendering materials such as carbon fibres, graphene or other experimental elements used, the rotary joint that Johnson-Fluiten offers is the RHB joint.

The right solution for high temperatures and high speeds

The RHB series rotary joints are designed to work at very high temperatures, which can be achieved by using thermal oil, in applications that also require high rotational speeds of up to 2,900 RPM.

This performance can be achieved by using two special balanced mechanical seals and bearings with closed-circuit oil cooling. For safety reasons, it is absolutely necessary to avoid any leakage of the process fluid into the atmosphere; a condition made possible by the double mechanical seals with pressurised barrier used in Johnson-Fluiten's RHB couplings.

The main features of these unions, which represent a real advantage for the end customer, and which have allowed Johnson-Fluiten to become a historical parnter of Comerio Ercole, can be listed:

• (1) -  The life cycle of the sealing rings tested up to 20,000 hours

• (2) -  The lack of bellows seals, which excludes the possibility of catastrophic leaks

• (3) -  The thermally stabilised roller bearings that guarantee a long service life and can withstand high axial and radial loads

Why is the rotary joint considered a critical component in this application?

The operation of the complete spindle is directly related to the perfect functionality of the rotary joint. Under all conditions, the rotary joint must allow proper cooling for the machine tool spindle, which is the most stressed and worn part. In modern machines, a malfunction of the rotary joint could cause damage to the entire system, and completely repairing the damaged part can be very costly.

What are the main features of Johnson-Fluiten rotary joints provided by KADANT?

The main feature of Johnson-Fluiten rotary joints for us is reliability. As we have said, the component plays a small but crucial part in the economy of the whole machine, it has to be a guaranteed component, it has to inspire 'confidence' when you mount it on a modern spindle. We did a job on a machine that had a problem with the rotary joint, and repairing all the parts involved in the failure cost the customer between 14.000 and 40.000 EURO, according to the spindle / machine type.

A risk that is not worth taking since, in addition to the costs of repairing and restoring the machine, the cost of lost production must also be considered... How do you proceed with the customer when working on modern machine tools?

Mainly, our job is to restore the perfect functionality of the machine tool that the customer uses. But we do not stop there... very often our work also aims at raising the overall quality, in other words optimising the spindle's performance; in this way the customer can produce more, faster and with less machine downtime.

Which Kadant products do you prefer for spindle maintenance? And what specific benefits have you experienced by using them?

We have been working with KADANT for almost 10 years now, and the rotary joints we use most are the GFLA and GHP manufactured by Johnson-Fluiten. The choice of these two components has proven to be a winner in many ways; of course in terms of quality they represent the top worldwide, but it is not just a matter of safety and reliability:

The GFLA rotary joint, thanks to their adaptability, are able to be mounted on almost all machine tools within our competence, it is therefore possible to use the same rotary joint for a large number of applications, which greatly simplifies logistics and represents a tangible and measurable saving. In fact, these rotary joints are suitable for use with water, lubrication fluid, oil and even air, making them the best choice for normal maintenance work on spindles: they are the benchmark for us for this type of component and the first choice if we need to replace the part on the spindle.

But if the objective is an increase in machine performance, Johnson-Fluiten GHP rotary joints are the top-of-the-range products for this purpose: they are both for high speeds (being able to reach up to 32,000 rpm thanks to ceramic bearings) and also for high pressures up to 150 Bar. Fitting this component means an improvement in the efficiency of the entire machine tool that is translated into overall productivity; a real benfit that is truly appreciated by customers.

The quality of the product has a big impact, but in day-to-day work it is the service that makes the difference. Flexible metal piping is used on the inlet and outlet connections of rotary joints to allow the movement of the joint itself and the thermal expansion of the pipes.

The consequences of inadequate piping should not be underestimated.

Inadequate installations can cause a number of problems, including:

Using a vertical flexible pipe allows the expansion of the header and balances out any misalignment between the rotary joint and the piping. At the same time, the horizontal part of the flexible pipe assists the thermal and hydraulic expansion of the vertical section, ensuring that high forces are not applied to the rotating joint.

This approach offers unparalleled flexibility in terms of pipe length, horizontal and vertical movement of the pipes and cylinder. Sturdy and versatile components

Among the many solutions available in the Johnson-Fluiten range, Matex primarily uses R and RH rotary joints in sizes from 3/8" to 2 ½" and Z rotary joints from 1 ¼" to 2 ½".

The versatility and strength of the R and RH joints make them suitable for many fluids and are mainly used with water, air and oil for heating but also for cylinder cooling. They are also produced in two passages, with fixed or rotating internal siphon, which allows simultaneous fluid inlet and extraction. The maintenance requirements of these rotary joints are minimal; the R and RH joints incorporate Johnson-Fluiten's unique Quick Replacement Design (QRD) technology that allows any work to be carried out with the joint still fitted in the machine, reducing seal replacement procedures to a matter of minutes.

Resistance to temperatures of up to 180°C, pressures of up to 50 Bar and high dynamic applications (up to 3000 rpm) makes them suitable for even the most intense conditions of use. As one of Johnson-Fluiten's most popular couplings, they are always in stock and delivery is very fast.

The Z rotary joints are specially designed to be used with diathermic oil and particularly suitable for high-temperature applications (up to 300°C) due to the graphite inner bushings. Sealing is ensured by an antimony-impregnated graphite ring in contact with the rotor and the cast iron flange with QPQ surface treatment.

Although the Z-joints are so versatile that they are suitable for custom-built machines such as Matex solutions, they are also standard joints and as such are available very quickly.

 In addition to product quality, Johnson-Fluiten's experience and history also played a key role in Matex's choice of this supplier.

“The performance of these machines depends a lot on the stability of the components in order to guarantee a consistent temperature across the entire length of the machine,” prosegue Calcara; “stability results in a good product and consequently less waste. Everything is fine, then, but for Johnson-Fluiten 'fine' is not enough: the solution showed margins for improvement that were immediately identified and analysed. In particular, the type of rotary joint adopted, ideal for heavy-duty applications, proved to be sensitive to vibration due to its large size and weight.  In order to guarantee the absolute operational reliability of the component, the Johnson-Fluiten engineers suggested a small improvement; the joint was therefore tied to a support, a solution that allowed the effect of vibrations to be totally attenuated.

How they are made

A multi-pass rotary union is made of the normal components of a rotary union such as the rotor, guides (or bearings), gaskets, body and seal. When difficulties appear, by working together we always find a solution

Supporting this statement, we can quote a real-life case in which Johnson-Fluiten support was crucial in solving a technical problem that allowed the company to optimise the design of one of its jam-making machines at a major European manufacturer.

After the delivery of a machine to a customer in Northern Europe, reports came in of loud noises from the supplied rotary joint. Offering an outstanding after-sales service, Johnson-Fluiten engineers immediately went to the site and analysed the situation, surveying the component in operation.

The SX-Series rotary joint by KADANT that was supplied for the application is normally used in steam, water and hot oil handling processes and is equipped with carbon-graphite bearings that allow automatic alignment and ensure a long service life even when installed on non-concentric cylinders.

After a careful inspection of the condition of the rotary joint, it was immediately possible to identify the cause of the component's sub-optimal operation; an incorrect assembly of the end customer's part. The rotary joint appeared to be completely fixed in place, without the slightest possibility of movement; in addition, it had to support the weight of 1.5 metres of rigid piping, which put the seal under extraordinary stress.

The unusual wear of the component was therefore due to factors unrelated to the product; but this did not stop the Johnson-Fluiten engineers who, after careful analysis of the application, suggested a different assembly to allow the rotary joint itself to perform its movements freely.

Then, after changing the rotary joint cartridge and restoring the component's perfect functionality, Johnson-Fluiten engineers provided design instructions to modify the design of the machine part:

• 1 - Replacing a fixed pipe connected to the joint with a flexible one

• 2 - Changing the design of the anti-rotation support to increase the movement of the joint

• 3 - Modify the support to allow the bracket to only act as a contrast to the rotation and leave the rotary joint free to slide axially

The suggested modifications made it possible to reduce the strain and weight on the rotary joint, which could not work at its best with such forces.

Thanks to these solutions, it was possible to significantly improve the efficiency of the system in the long term, saving the end customer time and, above all, money.

Johnson-Fluiten turns 20. The Milan-based company, founded in 2003 as a joint venture between Kadant-Johnson (then 'The Johnson Corporation') and Fluiten Spa, for the design and production of solutions for water, steam, oil and refrigerant fluid applications, combines the best aspects of the two entities: an American multinational with ninety years of history behind it and an Italian company appreciated for its creativity and flexibility.

We talked about this business and its prospects in this double interview with Victor Caronni, Marketing Manager, and Marco Golla, Sales Director.

Since 2003, the company has been offering its customers a skilful mix of reliability and innovation that makes it one of the most appreciated suppliers of rotary joints in Italy and worldwide. But let's start from the beginning, how was this company created?

Victor Caronni: The company was born from the union of the expertise of The Johnson Corporation (now Kadant Johnson), the company that invented the rotary joint for steam in 1933, and the Italian company Fluiten, a company known and appreciated for its range of standard and customised mechanical seals.

Especially Fluiten has always stood out for its focus on research and development: important investments over the years have led the company to have one of the most advanced dynamic test rooms in Europe.

Johnson-Fluiten is a combination of the two companies that benefit from the better aspects of the two entities merged; the solidity of the North American multinational and the versatility of the Italian company.

Johnson-Fluiten solutions have all the features that customers can expect from the range offered by a large group: safety, stability and quality guaranteed by accurate and certified control systems.

In addition to this, the company's know-how built up over decades and in-depth knowledge of the different application sectors and their special requirements are capitalised on by Johnson-Fluiten's engineers to offer customised solutions, demonstrating flexibility and speed of time to market that is hard to match. Even those who do not find the best product in the wide range already available will be able to get a tailor-made solution in a time frame that matches the requirements of their production process.

For those who are not familiar with the company, can you explain what Johnson-Fluiten does?

Victor Caronni: Our company designs and manufactures rotary joints for applications that use water, oil, oil-water mixtures, gases and other fluids.

Production includes single-pass and multi-pass rotary joints, which are capable of handling multiple fluids simultaneously. The range is very wide, with joints in the catalogue ranging from quarter-inch to eight-inch sizes and the capability to create different sizes according to customer specifications.

The core of our product is the quality of the mechanical seal: Fluiten's leadership in this area has transferred to Johnson-Fluiten's offering, which is unique among rotary joint manufacturers in using in-house manufactured sealing rings rather than using subcontractors. Companies that manufacture seals themselves, on the other hand, do not produce joints: full control over all components, coupling and seal, is an exclusive Johnson-Fluiten feature that is evident in the quality of the final product.

Fluiten's know-how is not limited to rotary joint segments but extends to other components, such as centrifugal pumps, allowing Johnson-Fluiten to use their expertise in a wide variety of seals and applications.

Which industry sectors are most relevant to your portfolio?

Marco Golla: Rotary joints are used in almost all sectors of the mechanical industry: Johnson-Fluiten has customers in all of these segments, but some are particularly interesting for us. Starting with machine tools: these often require lubrication of the tool to allow constant machining and avoid overheating. The passage of lubricating fluid from the fixed part to the rotary spindle requires a rotary joint with enough strength and sealing to ensure a constant and correct supply of lubricant to the tool under all conditions of operation without getting it where it shouldn't.

One area where rotary joints play an essential role is in plastics processing systems; these joints are also used in film production, while for moulding they are only used in special cases, such as rotational moulds.

The Food & Beverage industry is another interesting market for Johnson-Fluiten's rotary joints: from the baking of jams to sugar production, yoghurt preparation and the processing of meat waste (rendering), there are plenty areas where rotary joints are used. Stainless steel couplings are suitable for these uses. Stainless steel is an ideal material for contact with food, as it can be cleaned with aggressive cleaning agents without altering its qualities, thus meeting the strict hygiene standards that understandably apply in the industry.

Rotary joints are also essential in the rubber industry, particularly in the automotive sector, where they are used both by large OEMs in tyre manufacturing and by car makers for spare parts production.

The major players in the metal industry are also familiar with Johnson-Fluiten rotary joints that are used in steel, aluminium and alloy production facilities; in particular, they are deployed to deliver the cooling fluid for continuous castings.

In the chemical-pharmaceutical sector, joints with certifications issued by different authorities are requested; from ATEX to FDA, so our duly certified joints are also appreciated in this segment.

There is also plenty of opportunities for rotary joints in other industries, from textiles to corrugated cardboard manufacturing.

In all sectors, Johnson-Fluiten has the expertise to approach machine manufacturers directly but is also at the service of system users for any improvement or replacement of existing components.

What differentiates Johnson-Fluiten products from the competitors?

Marco Golla: Let us start by saying that the Made in Italy label, even in mechanics, definitely has its charm: our products, made entirely in Italy in the company's own factories, without using foreign subcontractors for the seals, are appreciated for the greater reliability into total quality control and for the warranty of an outstanding mechanical seal, with near-zero tolerance against leaks, even in critical applications with high speed, temperature and pressure.

Because of their safety, they are particularly appreciated by the mid- to high-end category of machine builders and especially by those who sell their systems abroad, where an initial investment in zero-maintenance components translates into a significant reduction in the need for servicing.

Finally, some products are not comparable to competitor solutions just because we make them by ourselves: this is the case with rotary joints that incorporate our exclusive Quick Replacement Design (QRD), a technology that allows any maintenance work to be reduced to a matter of minutes.

What benefits do customers have in dealing with Johnson-Fluiten?

Marco Golla: Using Johnson-Fluiten joints means being able to simplify different aspects of the production and management process thanks to the versatility of our products: while most of our competitors' joints are adapted to a particular type of operating condition (speed, pressure, temperature and type of fluid) where each condition has its own specific joint, our solutions can be used in all conditions, thanks to the special mechanical seal: this drastically reduces the number of parts that need to be kept in stock, with clear advantages for logistics and productivity.

Another benefit that our customers find is the expertise of our technicians, which results in a free consultancy service from the first contact: we can talk to the most prepared customers as well as those with more basic knowledge, providing them with the right information to identify the most suitable solution and lead them in their choice. Our range is so wide that in most cases we can find a standard solution available in a very short time.

But it is when a project requires tailor-made solutions that the expertise of our technicians is most appreciated: from the analysis of the process and of the product type that the customer wants to make, they already have a clear idea of the joint needed, which is then refined during further discussions with our technical department in Italy to lead to the proposal of the ideal joint in a short time.

A good 30 per cent of our customers use this service and end up with customised products; otherwise,  if we can find the right product in our catalogue, and we only have to perform minor adaptations, we go directly into production with the required quantities.

For more extensive modifications - for example, to change the flow rate of a spindle from 30 to 200 litres per minute - we go through a prototyping and testing phase: depending on the complexity, the preliminary design can take a couple of weeks (and in 90% of the cases it turns out to be successful without the need for further adjustments). Within 6-8 weeks, the prototype is ready for testing: the tests carried out in-house before delivery are meticulous, with components such as rotors tested before assembly and tolerances of less than 2 microns. The assembled joints are then submitted to dynamic testing (typically, cycles of 60-90 seconds at 15,000 rpm and pressurised liquid) and finally tested after sales, on-site, with our full availability to step in for any adjustments. If better performances are required, we do not simply replace the coupling with a new one, but carefully study the situation and make customised modifications, with great care, which seems to be handcrafted, but is actually linked to sophisticated industrial control, filing and data storage systems.

Environmental topics are central to many of your target markets: how do you deal with these problems within your company?

Victor Caronni: From an environment-friendly point of view, Johnson-Fluiten has fully embraced the Kadant philosophy, which in 2021 was awarded the prestigious SEAL Business Sustainability Award and nominated for the second year in a row by Business Week as one of the most sustainable companies in the world; all companies in the group focus their strategies on offering customers solutions that make production more sustainable.

Johnson-Fluiten has a positive effect on the environmental compatibility of its customers thanks to the maximum tightness of its joints, which guarantees minimum leakage and, as a result, optimal use of resources, but it is also committed to sustainability: the company is completely plastic free and uses fully recyclable packaging. Like all companies in the Kadant group, it uses energy from 100% renewable sources; 80% of its suppliers are audited for compliance with environmental protection regulations.

During 2022, what strategies have you deployed to overcome the challenges faced in almost all industries, such as supply shortages and longer delivery times?

Victor Caronni: What sets us apart is a constant focus on customer needs; we could not ignore the time delivery factor, which we know has a huge influence on our customers' business. Time is a component of quality: meeting delivery is essential to satisfy the customer's needs.

Thanks to the establishment and retention of a network of trusted partners and the investments in production departments and warehousing, we have managed to complete more than 90 per cent of deliveries in advance or within the agreed timeframe: a performance that is significantly higher than the market average and fully comparable to the results achieved in the pre-pandemic era.

From this point of view, being part of a large group like Kadant is certainly crucial: we have worked to improve vertical integration and have our supply chain understood entirely within the group, thus achieving particularly short delivery times.

Marco Golla: In addition, there is the efficiency of our new fully automated warehouse that meets smart factory criteria. We are now able to fulfil a considerable share of orders within 24 hours, but it is not only automation that makes us efficient: in special cases we have delivered the joints ourselves to their destination, providing a tailor-made service that no level of automation would have made possible. This is one of the winning aspects of our reality, a company with craftsmanship flexibility and creativity supported by a large industrial group.

A technical aspect that allows us to further speed up deliveries is the fact that the majority of our joints are in stock already assembled, zeroing the time required for preparation: this is an investment in terms of available space and processing time that benefits our customers.

What goals do you set for 2023 and how do you plan to achieve them?

Victor Caronni: It may seem quite ambitious to talk about double-digit growth targets at this time, but we have become very comfortable with them by now: for several years our sales have been growing at rates of around 10 per cent annually, and we are determined to continue on this path. We have therefore invested in human resources, with the hiring of a new sales technician, and we also intend to explore more carefully the areas where we have traditionally been less present.

To keep our relationship with customers strong and grow, we will invest above all in service, ensuring that we can be in the market quickly when needed; however, we will not lose sight of international events, investing in online and offline communication activities related to major events so that customers will always know that we are by their side

The choice between a ball-bearing rotary joint or one supported by a carbon guide is affected by several factors, let's find out which ones.

Both options feature a self-supporting structure that is used when there is no external structure to mount a rotary joint, or when the joint configuration and application do not require external support. For many applications, rotary joints with external ring support, such as the PTX® rotary joint or the CorrPro® rotary joint, are the best solution.

Self-supporting KADANT rotary joints

Carbon-supported rotary joints, such as the SX® rotary joint or the ELS™ rotary joint, are best suited for low-speed and high-temperature applications. Carbon has a low coefficient of thermal expansion and can therefore tolerate a wide temperature differential.

KADANT rotary joints with Carbon guides

The rotary joint fitting will have about the same temperature as the fluid and will heat up very quickly causing it to expand. The body of the rotary joint heats up more slowly and is generally cooler due to exposure to atmospheric conditions. Additional clearance is only required on the guide ID to handle the thermal expansion. In a bearing-supported rotary joint, the guide ID and OD are closely coupled and the thermal expansion must be absorbed by the bearing's internal clearance. This makes the configuration and choice of bearing dependent on temperature.

Carbon rails also have some advantages in larger sizes. Carbon is easily custom shaped, whereas large ball bearings can be more difficult to source, sometimes requiring long lead times. Carbon guides do not require lubrication and only need maintenance under normal conditions when the seal ring is worn and needs to be replaced. Carbon-supported rotary joints range in size from ½" to 14" flow diameter.

Ball bearing-supported joints, such as the RX® rotary joint and the SERIES R joint, are typically used in high-speed applications and when runout is critical. Rotary joints operating at high speeds utilise a balanced face seal that requires precise alignment of the seal faces. In addition to face seals, multi-pass rotary joints with DuraSeal® technology require runout control that only ball elements can provide. Ball bearings are also used in applications requiring low drive torque. Some applications require a relubrication and maintenance programme to ensure optimum service life. Ball bearing rotary joints are available in a wide range of sizes, the largest of which are typically suitable for customised applications.

As good as new. Our rotary joint reconditioning service gives the product perfect functionality "as if it had just left the factory". We are so confident in the result that we guarantee it.

All mechanical components have a 'life cycle' and when they are used in particularly heavy-duty applications, for parts exposed to normal wear and tear, it is necessary to carry out some checks and professional maintenance so that the system always works at its best.

Let's take one of our customers as an example who treats animal waste (or also called 'rendering') with its plants. Treating slaughterhouse waste such as bones, blood, feathers, carcasses, leather, and turning them into bone and meat flour, makes it possible to deal with a large market and many fields of application. But the operating conditions of these plants are very demanding as they take over the whole 'dirty' part of the slaughterhouse production.

Due to the application, you would expect a normal rotary joint to start showing the first signs of wear after about 2-3 years, but KADANT and Johnson-Fluiten products are a special case. The design, the quality in the choice of materials and the care taken in the manufacture of our rotary joints allow us to rely on consistent performance, in some cases for more than three times as long.

Indeed, after more than 5 years of intensive use, one of our customers contacted Johnson-Fluiten's service department, who had received a 5" double-pass KADANT rotary joint, to request a total reconditioning due to the presence of small steam leaks. The restoration of the component's efficiency should have been total, the aim of the service was to restore the joint to the same condition in which it had left the factory many years before.

After carefully disassembling the joint, Johnson-Fluiten technicians checked the wear condition of the seal, which had lost its integrity and expired its natural life due to use. Several checks and dimensional inspections of all parts of the joint were carried out to verify the actual condition of the component. Once this phase was completed, it was possible to replace the graphite, the internal seals and carry out a deep cleaning of the parts that did not need to be changed.

After this professional and accurate procedure, the joint was mounted on the customer's machine to verify that the original performance had been restored. Here we can see the result:

THE PROBLEM OF INCREASING ENERGY COSTS

Paper production is one of the most energy-consuming industries in the world, and gas (which is facing huge price increases) is the largest source of energy used; in detail, fossil gas is used to heat water and produce steam, which is used to evaporate the water inside the paper fibres.

How important are expertise and flexibility in finding effective technical solutions?

Let's find out how it was possible to solve a critical application problem to the rotary joint of a workhead spindle

Thanks to the expertise and competence of Johnson-Fluiten engineers, an effective solution was developed for a major company that was complaining of continuous problems with the rotary joint used in the workpiece spindle of their new machine tool.

The context

The company is a solid historical entity that has been producing a wide range of machine tools for about 50 years, its main field of activity is finishing and surface processing of gears used in machine building, aerospace, automotive and robot industries.

The high-tech features of their products show the company’s very high standards, which is now part of a multinational group renowned worldwide for the efficiency and eco-sustainability of their machines.

For their latest project, a technical solution used seemed to compromise further development of the entire machine. In particular, the new machine could not be brought to market because the two-pass rotary joint used for the workhead spindle was continuously subject to failure.

The problem

The mechanical component originally used was a two-pass rotary joint, supplied by a third-party company, which was supposed to work with hydraulic oil and, as designed, was expected to seal at a high pressure.

After several attempts, all of which ended in component failure, the machine tool designers approached the experts at Johnson-Fluiten to find a solution that offered the expected results and did not involve redesigning the entire mechanical assembly.

By analyzing the data, drawings, and gathering as much information as possible, with a hands-on approach in the field, the group led by SALES DIRECTOR Marco Golla was able to come up with an accurate diagnosis of what was going on.

The operating conditions of the component were immediately rated as being particularly demanding; in particular, the application required the rotary joint to work with a pressure of 70 bar in both passes. In addition, the machine design tied the workpiece spindle to a specific dimension that could not be changed.

"It was immediately clear that it would not be possible to meet the customer's requirements with a standard product, even a high-end one, and developing a component from scratch would not be a workable solution in terms of time and especially cost.

The solution

Thanks to the expertise and direct experience in the machine tool industry of the in-house R&D department, it was possible to engineer an existing rotary joint: starting from a G series custom design made previously for the same application, substantial modifications were applied to achieve the necessary performances for the correct operation of the work head spindle. Specifically:

 - The inner rotor of the joint was modified to fit special bearings

 - Standard bearings were replaced with special type bearings capable of carrying higher loads

The experience

After testing the prototypes at our in-house laboratory, with the operating conditions provided by the customer, the first samples were delivered for a trial on the actual machine.

The tests performed were passed successfully and the rotary joint supplied by Johnson-Fluiten was validated for final production, setting a new quality standard for this type of machine tool.

Italian manufacturing does not slow down and, in fact, came together again in Bologna at the 20th edition of Mecspe, the exhibition of manufacturing and technological innovations for industry.

What is really important for companies today?

After more than 20 years, thanks to the perseverance of our colleague Luigi Rolfini, Johnson-Fluiten managed to enter again in the market with sectored mechanical seals. In this case, there is a cover around the lower and upper corrugating and press cylinders, where the sheet of cardboard passes to preserve a constant temperature.

The two sliding surfaces come into contact during the rotation of the cylinder, by means of a mechanical system present within the plant.

Q. Hi Marco. Thank you for making the time for this interview. How long have you been part of Johnson-Fluiten? Could you share your journey inside the company?

A. To be honest I feel part of this company because I started my journey in Johnson-Fluiten when the company was established.

My journey began long time ago in Fluiten, where I started in the technical office, when the drawings were still made on the drafting machine.

I continued in the sales office as an internal sales manager of mechanical seals, and then I was assigned an area as an Area Sales Manager. It allowed me to get a lot of technical and commercial experience.

Afterwards I had the opportunity to follow exclusively the rotary union on the Italian market and this is what I have done last years in Fluiten.

In September 2003, Johnson-Fluiten was born, a joint venture between Fluiten and Johnson Italia. The logical consequence was to bring my and Fluiten's know-out into the new company.

Since 2003, in Johnson-Fluiten I have always improved professionally, managing different industrial markets, dealing with customers every day, acquiring many customers, working on new challenges and new projects, always trying to reach the company's goals.

Recently I have been able to bring my experience around the world, comparing myself with colleagues or directly with foreign customers, focusing to develop new markets and new opportunities.

Q. What is the best part of your job?

A. It’s difficult to choose. There are so many aspects that I like about my job.

I consider contact with customers, the possibility of traveling, looking for new opportunities and learning different cultures are the fundamental elements of my job.

However, in the first place, I put the relationship I try to create with customers.  Customers that even today, after all these years, let me learn something new from their experience.

Q. Where do you see the biggest opportunities for Johnson-Fluiten in the years to come?

A. An interesting and continuously growing market is the Asian one.

I'm sure Johnson-Fluiten and Kadant have great opportunities to improve their business and create new ones.

The great point of our company and of our entire group is the ability to listen, understand, and find solutions to get the needs of a constantly evolving market.

Our greatest opportunities are our customers that allow us to work with them every day.

Q.What makes you proud of professionally? And personally?

A. Professionally I am very proud to be part of this great company, which supports me and allows me to grow every day, as I am proud of every new customer who starts collaborating with us.

Personally, I am proud of my family, seeing our children grow up every day is a priceless joy.

Q. If you could give one advice to the ones that are starting a career in Business Development, what would it be?

A. Never lose of your own goals, never give up on first failures, be curious and have the humility to learn every day.

You will always find someone more prepared and competent than you, use this as an opportunity to learn something.

The ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU was published on 29 March 2014, by the European Parliament. It refers to the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The aim of of the directive is to allow the free trade of ‘ATEX’ equipment and protective systems within the EU by removing the need for separate testing and documentation for each member state. See it as a equipment passport for the countries in the EU. It is not replacing the CE marking for the machine directive. It is an additional requirement for some of the components

In the USA a similar standard that is the HAZLOC standard. This standard also defines and classifies hazardous locations such as explosive atmospheres.

ATEX in simple terms is trying to avoid that in a dangerous environment a component is able to set a fire or an explosion. In a dangerous environment like explosive gasses, dust or fibers it does not require a lot to set a fire or create an explosion. A heated surface, a mechanical or electrical spark is sufficient can be enough to start this.

Why is ATEX relevant for a rotary union? A rotary union is often part of a complex system of components. Johnson-Fluiten unions are used in applications and machinery that are delivered to industrial processes that require ATEX certification. Frequent requests arrive from applications in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry. Often these unions also require specific material compatibility, and we supply specific mechanical seals or O-rings.

In some case however a standard union can be compatible, and we can supply the rotary union from stock. The rotary union needs to have the ATEX marking on the union. Also indicate with your order that it requires an ATEX certificate. We can then mark the ATEX logo and required information on the rotary joint.

Green energy generating a more sustainable world: Discover how Johnson-Fluiten Rotary improved Kaplan Turbines’ efficiency, productivity and energy saving.

Kaplan hydroelectric turbines have been using Johnson-Fluiten rotary unions for years. The precision manufacturing continuous improvement and service have made Johnson-Fluiten an appreciated partner.

The Kaplan turbine, invented 1912, has been a long, proven solution for generating green energy. Kaplan turbines have an efficiency of more than 90%. Controlling the rpm, which is typically between 50-500 rpm, is important to optimize the efficiency.  

The wicket gate and the blade pitch control the Kaplan turbine’s rpm. The blade pitch on the rotating blades are controlled with 2 hydraulic cylinders. A rotary union transfers the hydraulic pressure from the pump to the rotating blades. The pressure drops over the blade is what creates the rotation.

The hydraulic pressure in the system for the pitch control can be as high as 100 bar (1500 psi). Sealing technology with polymer seals, like lip seals, cannot withstand the pressure in combination with the rpm. The wear on these seals will be too high for the required interval times.  Mechanical seals might be able to handle the pressure and rpm, but if a seal would fail it would lead to loss of control of the turbine. A large amount of oil could leak from the system.

Johnson-Fluiten rotary unions are manufactured with a close gap seal. With a small gap manufactured with micron precision, the amount oil leakage passing through the gap can be controlled. Because it is a non-contacting seal, wear is low which results in high reliability and controllability. The leaked oil is captured and put back in the system. This way, waste is avoided as environmental and efficiency impacts on the production process.

Added to it, Johnson-Fluiten can engineer the unions to incorporate mounting positions for sensors or different hose connections and can interchange to older turbines if spare parts are becoming difficult to procure. It increases the productivity and saves time on connectivity issues as procurement needs.

- undertake to promptly and responsibly inform the employer of the presence of any flu symptoms during the performance of the work performance, taking care to remain at an adequate distance from the people present
